The Types of AED Training Devices

Many people know what automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are, but the majority may not be familiar with how to use them. AEDs are life-saving devices, used by first responders, emergency medical services (EMS), firefighters, police officers, and even the general public, in sudden cardiac arrest situations.

AED training devices are also available to simulate the experience of using an AED without using the actual high-energy electric shocks, and these products help familiarize people with the process (so that they’re more inclined to react instead of panic). Below, we’ll take a look at some of the AED training systems available.

When to Use an AED

AEDs deliver a shock to the heart during cardiac arrest. This typically occurs during a disruption in the heart’s electrical activity, causing a dangerously fast or irregular heartbeat. An AED’s shock can stop an irregular heartbeat, known as arrhythmia, to allow the heart’s normal rhythm to resume. If an AED is not utilized immediately, the patient’s chance of surviving drops significantly. Commonly, EMS personnel use an AED along with chest compressions and CPR. The AED devices are designed to be user-friendly for those who are less experienced (or inexperienced) and will talk through each step, explaining when to apply CPR compressions or open the airway.

Unfortunately, patients with no heartbeat at all cannot be treated with an AED. When electrodes are applied, the device measures heart rate and will determine whether a shock is needed or not. Because of this, training devices have special programming for the trainee to practice on a manikin with no pulse.

What to Expect From an AED Training Device

An AED trainer simulates an actual cardiac emergency situation, allowing the user to practice multiple scenarios as long as they are programmed into the AED trainer’s system. Typical AED trainers play audio instructions, such as those heard while using an (AED). Their lights and displays also mimic those of an actual AED. These types of trainers are available in two varieties: stand-alone and manikin.

Stand-alone AED trainers contain all components necessary for training inside a single device. There are also manikin AED trainers, which can come in different versions. Some versions come with the AED training equipment, while others are CPR manikins that double as AED training manikins. Depending on the training device, some include a remote control for an instructor to reset during a training scenario.

Prestan Professional AED Trainers and TAKE2 Manikins

The AED training package by Prestan contains two adult training manikins, two infant training manikins, and two Prestan AED UltraTrainers, along with instructions and a carry case. These CPR AED models can also be used to practice cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Philips AED Training Devices

Several AED training devices by Philips match the various models of AEDs that they offer. There is the Philips HeartStart Trainer 3, the Philips OnSite/Home Trainer, and Philips FRX Trainer.

Training Accessories

In addition to the AED training device itself, trainees will also need training pads (or training electrodes) that work with the AED training unit. AED training pads cannot deliver an electric shock, so do not confuse them with real AED electrodes.

Never store your AED training device and training electrodes in the same storage area or AED cabinet as a real AED. AED trainer pads come in packs that mimic the shape and design of actual electrodes for various device brands, such as Phillips or Cardiac Science.

AED trainer replacement pads are also available when the adhesive wears out. While most AEDs are only compatible with their own brand of electrodes, some universal electrode pads can be used with any brand.

The Laerdal Resusci Anne is a full-body manikin that allows the trainee to practice using an AED machine, including a head for training airway management.
