AED Usage
An AED is designed to deliver an electric shock to the heart. It is typically a lightweight, portable device that can be used by even an inexperienced individual. The shock delivered through an AED can potentially stop an irregular heartbeat, known as arrhythmia, and allow the heart’s normal rhythm to resume following sudden cardiac arrest. If treatment isn’t administered quickly, a victim’s chance of surviving drops by approximately seven to ten percent for every minute that a normal heartbeat isn’t restored. Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel will also sometimes use a defibrillator in conjunction with chest compressions during cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
The Recertification Process
Before they can be resold, AEDs must be checked and tested thoroughly to ensure complete functionality. This means that the refurbished AED passes its self-test process, is equipped with new electrode pads and rechargeable battery, and is updated with the latest software, if applicable. It also goes through a thorough cleaning of its components, including the LCD screen. Some accessories may be included, such as the battery charger. However, other accessories, such as a carrying case, spare batteries, or spare electrodes are typically sold separately.
